HISTORY
Alvin W. Dunbar founded the firm of Alvin W. Dunbar,
Consulting Structural Engineer, in July 1966 with an office in Richmond,
Virginia. C. Nelson Williams joined the firm in May 1972. Denwood
T. Milby joined Alvin W. Dunbar and C. Nelson Williams in September
1975, and the firm of Dunbar, Milby & Williams, Consulting Structural
Engineers, was formed. In 1986, two additional partners were named
to the firm: Kenneth J. Pittman, who has been with the firm since
1974; and R. Lindley Vaughan, Jr., who has been with the firm since
1978.
Dunbar Milby Williams Pittman & Vaughan has seven partners:

C. Nelson Williams, IV, PE, SECB, Treasurer;
Kenneth J. Pittman, PE, SECB, Secretary;
R. Lindley Vaughan, Jr., PE, SECB,
Vice President; Edward S. Fraher, III, PE, SECB,
Vice President; Stephen D. Barber, PE, SECB,
Vice President; and, Jeffrey S. Davis, PE, SECB,
Vice President. All partners are Registered Professional Engineers
and Certified by the Structural Engineering Certification Board.
The size of the staff has shown steady and even growth from two,
shortly after founding in 1966, to the present staff of twenty-seven.
The staff is comprised of seventeen registered structural engineers,
three graduate engineers, three structural engineering draftsman,
and four administrative personnel.
Offices are located in the Moorefield Office Complex on Midlothian
Turnpike in Richmond, Virginia and in the downtown area of Charlottesville,
Virginia.
EXPERIENCE
Dunbar Milby Williams Pittman & Vaughan provides
consulting structural engineering services to architects, governmental
institutions and agencies, other engineers, industry, and the general
public. Professional services constitute the entire activity of
the firm. Dunbar Milby Williams Pittman & Vaughan provides direct
consultation, investigations, studies, reports, plans specifications,
construction administration and product development and design.
Project types include New Construction, Renovation, Historic Preservation,
Adaptive Reuse and Structural Investigations.
The partners of the firm have 200+ combined years of experience
in all types of structural design, with over 4,000 projects. We
provide services for an average of $35,000,000 of construction each
month. Most of the firm's projects are in Virginia. However, projects
have been completed nationally and internationally.
Structures
have included wood, steel, cast-in-place and precast concrete, and
reinforced masonry. Foundation types include steel, precast concrete,
and wood piles, caissons, floating mats, and standard spread footings.
As an indication of a continuing commitment to the enhancement of
the quality of service and management, Dunbar Milby Williams Pittman
& Vaughan voluntarily participated in the Organizational Peer Review
Program of the American Consulting Engineers Council. Experienced
professionals were invited to examine practices and procedures in
six major areas: overall management, development and maintenance
of technical competence, project management, human resources, financial
management and business development. The findings of this Organizational
Peer Review and subsequent implementation of the results are aimed
at enhancing service to clients and professional practice.
In 1990, Dunbar Milby Williams Pittman & Vaughan was awarded the
Allied Professions Award by the Virginia Chapter of the American
Institute of Architects. This award is given to individuals or organizations
who have inspired, influenced, or complemented the architectural
profession in Virginia. In 1992, Dunbar Milby Williams Pittman &
Vaughan was awarded the Award of Excellence by the Virginia Chapter
of the American Concrete Institute for creative use of concrete
for The Hereford College at the University of Virginia. In 1997,
Dunbar Milby Williams Pittman & Vaughan received an Honorable Mention
Award from the Consulting Engineers Council of Virginia for the
new facilities at the University of Virginia Darden School of Business.
